SAPPHIRE – Supra-African Physics Partnership for Health Innovation and Radiotherapy Expansion
SAPPHIRE is a UK-led research and training initiative that partners with institutions in Ghana and South Africa to strengthen radiotherapy services through education, capacity building, and data-informed innovation. Led by the University of Oxford, Lancaster University, and the University of Cambridge, the project focuses on training the next generation of medical physicists and clinical experts, while supporting research into fault-tolerant technologies for linear accelerators (LINACs). By equipping local teams with practical tools, skills, and knowledge, SAPPHIRE aims to improve the reliability of radiotherapy equipment and expand access to safe, effective cancer treatment across Africa.
